“There once was a time, believe it or not, when the city had it’s landmarks and it’s hotspots and it was what it was. In 2009, Clic Gallery displayed Store Front: The Disappearing Face Of New York, using photographs from urban photographs James and Karla Murray. The exhibit was a collection of ten years worth of photographs throughout all five boroughs of local store front from different neighborhoods that are now unfortunately closed. This year, it’s all about Store Front II.”

Christiane Celle and Clic Gallery are proud to present STORE FRONT II by JAMES AND KARLA MURRAY, a sequel show to Clic’s exhibit STORE FRONT. The show will run from February 1st to March 27, 2011. There will be an opening reception and book signing by the artists on March 3rd, 2011, from 6 to 8 pm.

In the summer of 2009, Clic Gallery mounted STORE FRONT: THE DISAPPEARING FACE OF NEW YORK, a photographic survey documenting the fast-disappearing mom-and-pop stores of New York City, in conjunction with the release of their book of the same title. James and Karla Murray, specialists in urban photography, spent more than ten years photographing the distinctive facades of family-run shops in neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs, and their bright photographs of local institutions were wildly acclaimed. Praised by, among others, The New Yorker (”These unfussy, elegant and richly colored photographs give connoisseurs of signage, folk typography, and ambient erosion much to pore over”), The London Telegraph (“STORE FRONT offers vivid and intimate insights into the life of one of the world’s great cities.”) and The New York Times (”The images are bright and crisp…holds a curious fascination — indeed, a raw beauty — for anyone concerned with vernacular design.”), STORE FRONT was also acclaimed by Rolling Stone-Germany, Saveur, Print Magazine, Stern, Lufthansa, Die Zeit, and Der Spiegel.  James and Karla Murray have lectured extensively on the subject of the plight of New York City’s mom and pop stores at venues including The New York Public Library, The Brooklyn Historical Society, The Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, and the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. They have also appeared live on prime time NBC-New York’s “Around Town” with Cat Greenleaf, on Harry Allen’s program, “Nonfiction” on WBAI-NY, and were the subject of NHK’s documentary program, “NY Streets,” airing both in Japan and New York City.

Building on the success of STORE FRONT, STORE FRONT II will mount previously unexhibited photos from the Murrays’ photoseries, including shots of New York City landmarks, including Katz’s Delicatessen, CBGB’s and Lenox Lounge as well as lesser-known gems throughout the five boroughs. The show will also coincide with the release of STORE FRONT (MINI), a new, more compact and easily portable version of their original best-selling coffee table-size book.

In addition to their monograph STORE FRONT, JAMES AND KARLA MURRAY have co-authored two books on New York City graffiti art, “Broken Windows-Graffiti NYC” (Gingko Press 2002, revised 2009) and “Burning New York” (Gingko 2006) as well as “Miami Graffiti (Prestel 2009). Their work has been the subject of exhibitions at The New-York Historical Society and The Brooklyn Historical Society, and is part of the permanent collections of The Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, The New York Public Library and The Brooklyn Historical Society.

Store Front II is a fun and curious photography exhibit for onlookers to remember a
New York that once existed not too long ago. Known for hosting many acclaimed documentary urban photographers who photograph New York, Clic Gallery and curator Christiane Celle is presenting the sequel exhibit to the Murray’s 2009 exhibit, Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York. The Murrays have spent over a decade photographing the unique facades of small family-run shops in neighborhoods all over the city. While some portraits are well-known long time New York establishments (Katz’s Deli, McSorley’s, CBGB’s), others keep us guessing of their location.
