In their book Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York, author/photographers James and Karla Murray provide an intimate view of the mom-and-pop stores of New York’s neighborhoods including Greenwich Village. The Murrays will share interviews and photographs from their book, revealing how neighborhood stores help set the pulse, life, and texture of their communities.
Following their talk, the Murrays will lead a panel discussion with local store owners from Greenwich Village, including the Ottomanelli Brothers of Ottomanelli & Sons Prime Meat Market, Peter Longo of Porto Rico Coffee, and Matt Umanov of Matt Umanov Guitars.

GRAFFITI GONE GLOBAL Curators James and Karla Murray and artists CYCLE, CROME, SHIRO, BILLI KID and LADY PINK featured in MIAMI NEW TIMES article on Mom & Popism.
http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/riptide/2009/08/miami_graffiti_photographers_i.php
This is just freakin’ awesome. James and Karla Murray, the photographers behind Miami Graffiti, the book showcasing our finest street artists, have inspired a nostalgic acid trip of an art installation featuring local graff legend Crome.
For an exhibition still in the works called MOM & POPism, artist Billi Kid has made huge blow ups of photos from the Murrays’ book on disappearing mom-and-pop storefronts in New York. Then he’s plastered them on miniature buildings atop the Gawker Media building in Manhattan for graffiti artists to decorate. Among those spray-can impresarios invited: Crome of infamous Miami graffiti duo Crook and Crome and capo of the MSG crew, those personas non grata in Hollywood.
Now we’re wondering: can we get something like this in Miami? God knows we’ve lost some beloved and unique business storefronts to make room for soul-less developments. It’s only been gone for a year, but who isn’t nostalgic for the ugly yellow facade of the Pawn Shop Lounge? After the jump, a few more photos. Day two of MOM and POPISM had torrential rain, thunder, lightning and a great sunset. CROME MSG CARTEL closed out two days of painting that brought together an amazing group of Gawker Artists doing their thing. Thanks to Liz, Genevieve and Serena of GAWKER MEDIA for allowing such an incredible event to take place and to BILLI KID, who always amazes.
